The GPD Bazzite Controversy: Poor Timing and Communication Missteps
In September, GPD began marketing support for Bazzite on the product page for their WIN 5 handheld gaming console. Fast forward to January, a representative from GPD made a post on Reddit stating that an official adaptation of Bazzite was underway and that the necessary hardware had been sent to their development team. This claim was swiftly denied by Kyle Gospodnetich, the founder of Bazzite, in a response on the project’s Discord channel, where he stated, "GPD lied to you, sorry. We don’t officially work with anyone."
Not stopping there, Gospodnetich later released a formal statement urging GPD to refrain from using Bazzite’s name, logos, and intellectual properties. He clarified that no hardware had been delivered to GPD and labeled their claims of collaboration as entirely false. The situation took a turn for the worse when it was revealed that GPD had been working with Antheas Kapenekakis, a former Bazzite contributor who had been ousted from the project due to multiple breaches of the organization's Code of Conduct.
In a Reddit discussion, GPD’s YYang explained that Antheas had previously approached them regarding collaborations for the WIN 4 and WIN Max 2, leading GPD to assume that continuing with the WIN 5 would be a normal progression. Antheas had alluded to "internal management issues" at Bazzite, but GPD misjudged the impact this would have on the technical aspects and decided to push forward nonetheless. Just three days after GPD’s announcement about the collaboration, Bazzite made its own public declaration, rebuffing all claims made by GPD.
GPD maintains that all their partnerships are voluntary and without financial compensation, insisting they are "completely innocent in this matter." Subsequently, the Bazzite team corroborated that GPD was not to blame, confirming that Antheas had been removed from the project by a decisive majority vote due to ongoing conduct issues.
