A bold new vision for Sunderland's cultural scene has been given the green light! Washington's very own TV architect, George Clarke, is set to transform a historic property into a vibrant hub of literature, architecture, and creativity.
Clarke, a local boy made good, has proposed an ambitious project: a bookshop, cafe, and event space, all housed within a Grade II listed building on High Street West. But here's where it gets controversial... the upper floors will be converted into an apartment, offering Clarke and his family a home base in Sunderland, and also providing boutique accommodation for visitors.
Sunderland City Council praised the development, stating it would "encourage footfall, enhance the physical environment, and contribute to the unique character of Sunniside." The application highlights Clarke's passion for books and restoration architecture, and how this project will allow him to spend more time in his hometown.
The plans include a meticulous restoration of the original shopfront, reinstating Georgian-style joinery, and creating a new refuse and cycle store. A small cafe and wine bar will also be part of the experience, offering a cozy spot for visitors to relax.
And this is the part most people miss... Clarke envisions the upper-floor apartment as a "calm, well-designed space" that will not only accommodate him and his family but also serve as a haven for visiting writers, artists, and other creative minds. He sees it as a way to contribute to Sunderland's thriving creative community.
"Sunderland is evolving in brilliant ways," Clarke said, "and I hope Home of Books can be a part of that evolution, rooted in the city's rich history but open to new narratives and ideas."
