According to Ahmad Ahmadian, executive director at the technology nonprofit Holistic Resilience, previously inactive Starlink accounts in Iran have been reactivated, with subscription fees waived as of Tuesday. "It’s plug and connect … just put [the satellite terminal] somewhere that has access to a clear view of the sky, and you’re good to go," he told CNN. This development follows a reported phone call between former US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, where the possibility of Starlink access in Iran was discussed.
For days, the Iranian government has imposed a severe internet blackout, a tactic that has made it difficult to share information about the ongoing protests and the regime's actions. Tragically, reports indicate that over 1,800 protesters have been killed, although the true number may be far higher due to the communication shutdown.
While this free access is a welcome development for activists, it is only expected to reach a fraction of Iran's 92 million citizens. But here's where it gets controversial... The Iranian authorities are actively trying to disrupt Starlink signals using tactics that are similar to those used by Russia in Ukraine. Digital rights activists are calling for increased access to Starlink for Iranians. While Starlink isn't officially licensed in Iran, Musk previously stated that the service is available in the country. It is important to note that the use of Starlink was criminalized by Iranian authorities after the 12-day war between Israel and Iran last year.
Despite the risks, there was a surge in demand for Starlink equipment inside Iran following the war with Israel, according to Ahmadian. Mahsa Alimardani, a technology specialist at human rights organization Witness, highlights that Starlink connections have provided "a small window" into the bloody crackdown. With an estimated 50,000 Starlink receivers in Iran, expanding access could be a crucial deterrent to the regime.
In addition to Starlink, the US government has previously funded virtual private networks (VPNs) and other tools to help Iranians bypass censorship. And this is the part most people miss...
