In a swift response to a potential disaster, London Fire Brigade (LFB) dispatched a formidable force to combat a fire at the Rushey Green Nursery in Lewisham. At 7:40 p.m. on the 31st of January, 2026, the LFB's X post confirmed the arrival of eight fire engines and approximately 60 firefighters at the scene. The nursery, a three-storey building, was engulfed in flames, with footage capturing the intense blaze leaping from its roof. Cllr James J Walsh, the local councillor, shared a video on Facebook, confirming the active fire incident. The LFB's statement revealed the scale of the operation, emphasizing the bravery of firefighters tackling the fire at the nursery, where part of the roof was ablaze. The Brigade's Control Office received 17 calls, mobilizing fire crews from various stations to rush to the scene. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the swift action of the LFB prevented what could have been a catastrophic event. The nursery, catering to children from 6 months to 5 years old, was temporarily evacuated, and residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut due to the dense smoke. Drivers were also urged to steer clear of the area, as road closures were in place while the brave firefighters battled the blaze.
