Air Canada's Expansion Plans: A350s and New Routes to Australia (2026)

Get ready for an exciting development in the world of aviation! Air Canada is setting its sights on Australia as a potential destination for its new fleet of Airbus A350-1000 jets. This move could bring about a much-anticipated return to Melbourne, a city that Air Canada has been eyeing for some time.

Chief Commercial Officer Mark Galardo has hinted at the airline's ambitious plans, stating that the A350-1000 will not only allow them to expand into new markets but also improve their existing routes. Galardo shared his vision, suggesting the addition of another Australian destination, alongside key routes to Asia.

Melbourne seems to be the prime candidate, as Air Canada previously operated direct flights from Vancouver to Melbourne, a seasonal service that was well-received. However, the pandemic put a halt to this route, and now, Air Canada is eager to bring it back.

"We're excited about the prospect of returning to Melbourne," said Mark Nasr, Executive Vice President & Chief Operations Officer. "It's definitely on our radar, but we need to ensure we have the right resources in place."

Air Canada plans to introduce eight A350-1000 aircraft from 2030 onwards, with an option to order eight more, solidifying its position as Canada's flagship carrier for long-haul flights.

But here's where it gets interesting: the new fleet will bring about a significant upgrade to Air Canada's business class, known as Signature Class.

The A350s will feature a "next-generation cabin design" with enhanced connectivity and in-flight entertainment. Passengers can expect large 4K HD screens, Bluetooth audio streaming, wireless charging, and other modern amenities.

The much-anticipated upgrade to Signature Class will debut on 14 brand-new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, offering sliding privacy doors and an additional four 'business plus' suites at the front of the cabin.

Air Canada's new "Glowing Hearted" design standard will be a game-changer, focusing on premium revenue with an increase in premium seating capacity and optimized revenue layouts.

Row 1 of the Boeing 787-10 will offer more space and privacy, following the lead of airlines like Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, and Virgin Atlantic, who have transformed the first row of business class into exclusive suites.

These 'business plus' suites provide passengers with a premium experience, including personal wardrobes, larger screens, and dining for two. However, this luxury comes at a cost, with airlines charging a premium on top of the standard business class fare.

For instance, Lufthansa's Allegris Business Class Suite on its A350 aircraft comes with an additional fee of '€400' for long-haul flights, while Virgin Atlantic's Retreat Suites on its A330neo jets cost an extra £200 for London-US routes.
